18 November 2010 – 3 April 2011
Olomouc Archdiocesan Museum | Picture Gallery
Museum of Modern Art | Nave, Picture Gallery, Salon
The aim of this interdisciplinary exhibition is a complex survey of the history of the city of Olomouc, and its fine arts culture in particular, in the Baroque period. After the destruction brought about by the Thirty Years’ War, Olomouc experienced one of the most significant periods of its cultural blossoming. One can speak of a specific tone of Olomouc Baroque culture whose character was shaped by various influences arriving from Italy, the Danube region, Bohemia and Silesia, as well as by local specifics. The major protagonists were mainly the institutions of the Olomouc Bishopric and the Jesuit University, but also the urban environment and military administration related to the transformation of Olomouc into a modern European fortress. The exhibition will display items from church collections and collections of other museums both in this country and abroad. One of the key partners, apart from the Olomouc Archbishopric and Palacký University, is the Regional Museum in Olomouc preparing an exhibition focused on the bourgeois culture of Olomouc Baroque. The efforts for the synthetic mapping of “Olomouc Baroque” will be manifested in a representative catalogue.
