Narrative Presences2
The SEFO 2024 Triennial wants to be engaged and activating. It is a characteristic aspect of this exhibition format that many of the invited artists have responded not only to the Triennialʼs assignment in the boundaries of Moment – Monument – Document – Mocument, but also to current events, to the post-pandemic situation, to war disasters, and to humanitarian crises. We give them space with the conviction that art can and should be engaged.

Probably the most action-based is the series of workshops which, under the title Narrative Presences (Розповіді Присутностей, Jasmin Schaitl – Daria Lytvyněnko – Alina Pust – Marija Šurchal), has taken place in three locations (UA, AT, CZ) and involved direct victims of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in performative works. Karolina Grzywnovic has been moving for a long time in the dangerous territory of the Bialowieza Forest. She has actively participated in protests against the expansion of logging and is now researching the “scent strategies” of refugees, victims of the manipulative policies of undemocratic regimes.

We also consider as engaged all interventions in the public space, Randomroutinesʼ Automation of Luddites and Ilona Némethʼs Handiwork and her Memorial to the Women Who Cooked Salt, for which she is temporarily renaming the Square of National Heroes as the Square of National Heroes and Heroines.

Architectural, urban planning, and conservation issues related to the theme of the Triennial were addressed by five university teams in the Moment Olomouc case study.

As always, the local reception of the themes is expertly mediated by the local education department under the leadership of the best Central European educators: David Hrbek, Denisa Tessenyi, Hana Lamatová, and Marek Šobáň. We are looking forward to Liquid Baroque, travel cases, an AI mockument, and composing Monumental Compositions.

Asi nejvíc akční je série workshopů, která pod názvem Příběhy přítomností (Розповіді Присутностей / Narrative Presences, Jasmin Schaitl – Daria Lytvyněnko – Alina Pust – Maria Šurchal) proběhla na třech místech (UA, AT, CZ) a zapojila do performativní produkce přímé oběti ruské invaze na Ukrajinu.

Národních hrdinů a hrdinek.

Architektonické, urbanistické a památkářské otázky spjaté s tématem trienále v olomoucké případové studii Moment Olomouc řešila pětice ateliérů vysokých škol.

Lokální recepci témat jako vždy bravurně zprostředkovává domácí edukační oddělení pod vedením nejlepších středoevropských edukátorů: David Hrbek, Denisa Tessenyi, Hana Lamatová, Marek Šobáň. Těšme se na tekuté baroko, cestovní kufříky, AI mockument i komponování Monumentální kompozice.

Liquid Baroque

ARCHDIOCESAN MUSEUM LOUNGE

The project initiated by the educators wants to visualize and confront the unwavering status of historical architecture with the “liquid present” in an experimental form. The creative journey, which is of greater significance to the authors than the final artefact, will bring together several professional professions in preparation and will ultimately bring an object to the active-contextual zone of the Archdiocesan Museum, on which it will be possible to observe the gradual transformation of wax fragments of Baroque architecture into a form of previously indefinable visual value.

PETR SALABA, SCALESCAPE / MOCKUMENT GENERATED BY AI

AUDITORIUM OF THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

Artificial Intelligence has been making great inroads into cyberspace for some time now and is beginning to be applied in various areas of our lives. This is also evident in the field of art, where it is, at least so far, more of an imitation – and with very questionable results. Petr Salaba is the author of SCALESCAPE, the first half-hour film whose visuals were completely generated on the basis of text prompts without the use of animation techniques. It is the first film of this kind – at least it was at the time of its premiere at the Ji.hlava IDFF in autumn 2023. The film was created on the basis of written, detailed specifications for each individual scene and the system itself generated the shots. The documentary brings the theme of evolution from deep prehistory to the current present to the viewer sitting in the cinema. The filmmaker chooses sequences in predetermined time jumps that are chillingly reminiscent of the brevity of our lived reality.

How does one make a documentary film? (workshop)

STUDIO OF THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

This workshop with Peter Salaba will focus on the use of generative AI in film, the future of cinema and explore the meaning of artistic work in the context of unprecedented automation.

Monumental Composition XXIV (workshop)

How do we perceive the notion of monumentality in music today? An assignment for the workshop and for those who have not only never composed music, but even have no experience of playing any musical instrument, especially the piano or any other keyboard instrument. And this is the basic condition for participation in this exceptional project. Michaela Poláková, a teacher and composer based in the UK, proves through a series of her own methods that anyone can improvise and compose, regardless of their level of talent and ability to play. Michaela Poláková has worked in London schools for many years, collaborating on a regular basis with Essex Music Service, and the experience has taught her to create a safe space for her pupils where no one needs to be afraid. The music workshop will culminate in a monumental piece of music created on the spot. At the end, the resulting piece will then be performed by professional musicians for the creators and the audience to hear.
