Lubo
Lubo, who belongs to the nomadic Jeniš community, earns a modest living as a street artist. After he is drafted into the Swiss army in 1939 to defend the border against a possible German invasion, his wife dies tragically – she was trying to prevent the authorities from taking her three young children away from her as part of a campaign to “re-educate” the street children. The Swiss-Italian film then follows Lubo’s long journey to find love, his children, self-determination and freedom for his community.

The scorched earth
After an unsuccessful blow in the Ruhr, the thief Trojan returns after twelve years to Berlin, which the German filmmakers model as an almost deserted, dead-looking mix of architectural constructions made of glass and steel, soulless hostels and bankrupt cultural institutions. And yet, the great opportunity he has so long hoped for seems to be opening up for Trojan in the capital: a final commission that will change everything – the theft of the 1818 painting Woman Before Sunset. But the lucrative venture turns into an escape from his own life.
