JIŘÍ SUCHÁNEK: PERPLEX

The kinetic robotic installation Perplex works with the principles of reflection, concentration, echoes and the interplayof light and sound. Three rotating parabolic mirrors explore the space through light and sound flashes programmed in an unpredictable arrangement. The installation investigates the possibilities of mechanical waveforms and tests how, with a limited number of resources and the aid of continuous motion, a spatial situation can be condensed and complicated. In the installation, Jiří Suchánek refers to the early use of acoustics in the military industry. Parabolic acoustic mirrors were used in Great Britain for detecting enemy fighters, and the shape of the parabola gradually transformed into modern radar technology. Suchánek experiments with the possibilities of reflection on the parabolic mirror, but instead of passive reception, he works with their intentional and controlled transmission, thus creating a new spatial quality.
Jiří Suchánek (1979)
Artist, composer, musician, academic, and curator. He focuses on creating audiovisual installations, combining sound, light, objects, mechanics, or electronics with computer code. He places his installations in unconventional or “inappropriate” spaces, often in public spaces or nature. For his installations, he composes music and develops his own software and hardware. He incorporates natural, chaotic, and thermodynamic processes into his creative process. He advocates for the idea of open, shared authorship, where the environment is a co-author of the artwork. By transferring chaotic processes into sound, he explores the possibilities of experiencing and understanding reality through hearing. He teaches at the Faculty of Fine Arts (FAVU) and the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts (JAMU) in Brno. Since 2022, he has been co-organizing the SONDA music festival, and in 2024, he curated the exhibition Beyond the Sound.
The exhibition is part of the event ART’S BIRTHDAY 2025.
The exhibition includes strobe effects. Visitors sensitive to light stimuli are advised to consider this before attending.
