JACOB BROMS ENGBLOM: OBSERVATIONS I

What is the power of AI, and of extracting patterns, either by an artificial or a human mind? It is an inherent feature of our psyche that individuals extract patterns almost constantly – both on a very low neural level, but also in consciously consuming internet content and interacting with it, feeding back the algorithms. Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon in which perceived vague or indistinct stimuli are transformed into meaningful images with the help of fantasy. A typical example is the recognition of faces, animals and other objects in the shape of clouds, as well as finding Yeti, Nessie and other conspiracy imagery on blurry photographs. Observations I is a new work by Swedish artist Jacob Broms Engblom from the series Pattern Extraction which has been specially adapted for the 9:16pm Gallery’s two widescreens in the Museum of Modern Art in Olomouc.

The exhibition is part of the official program of the Festival of Film Animation and Contemporary Art PAF Olomouc 2020 (Dec 3–6 2020). This year you can screen all the festival program on-line and for free. Join us especially for Pattern Extraction – talk by Jacob Broms Engblom on his recent work with AI, at 4 pm Friday Dec 4. Organized by PAF Festival. Join us at Zoom or watch stream.
