The Václav Burian Poetry Prize goes to Hungary and Poland

This year’s Václav Burian Prize for Poetry was awarded to the Hungarian poet Zita Izsó by an international jury, while the audience was most impressed by the Polish poet and prose writer Urszula Honek. Both prizes were awarded to the artists on 2 October at the closing ceremony of the evening of author readings in CENTRAL of the Olomouc Museum of Art.
In addition to the prize-winning authors, the German poet and artist Clara Cosima Wolff, the Slovak poet Juliana Sokolová and the Czech poet Luboš Svoboda took part in the unusual poetry competition – the 9th edition of the Václav Burian Prize.

In addition to the Poetry Prize and the Audience Award, the Prize for Cultural Contribution to Central European Dialogue will be awarded to Polish art historian and economist Jacek Purchla on 18 October at CENTRAL. “This evening will also include an interview with Jacek Purchla, conducted by Professor Pavel Zatloukal, Director Emeritus of the Museum of Art,” adds Alexandr Jeništa from the Olomouc Museum of Art.The Václav Burian Prize Olomouc builds on the legacy of the Olomouc journalist, Polonist and poet Václav Burian (1959-2014). The jury will nominate five poets from Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, German-speaking Europe and, from 2023, Hungary. In 2022, the guest country was Belarus. The author’s presentation is followed by a public discussion and voting on the winner. The mission of the Václav Burian Prize is to present the most contemporary Central European poetry.
