King of Czech comics Saudek died on Friday, June 26 at the age of 80 in Motol hospital in Prague. The hospital was a cartoonist since 2006, when he fell into a coma after his throat choked bite. He started drawing comics in the 60s. His work is applied among others in the films “Who Wants to Kill Jessie?” and “Four Murders Are Enough, Darling”.
King of Czech comics created from Kaja Saudek especially his unmistakable style: solid, dynamic lines, exaggeration, ironic detachment, essential eroticism and quirky humor. His work became infamous Muriel and Angels from 1969, which was five years ago named the best Czech comics of all time.
On unmistakable draughtsmanship of Kaja Saudek we remember when viewing photos from a retrospective exhibition Hommage a Saudek, we held in 2014, and the accompanying events “On the back of superdragon“. During the event paid homage to the king of Czech comics nine young cartoonists paraphrases, variations, free processing of his original speech bubbles.
