Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, known as Guercino, was a self-taught artist and one of the great followers of Ludovico Carracci, Caravaggio and Reni. He painted the giant altarpiece The Burial of Saint Petronilla for St. Peters Cathedral in the Vatican. After Renis death in 1642, he transferred his residence to Bologna, where he became a leading painter and left countless drawings, caricatures, frescoes (Aurora), paintings on canvas and on wood and copper plates.
